I do often return to the theme of instant justice as for many of us it was they way it was. When we disobeyed or were caught out, retribution was instant. Taken in and bent over the first available table chair knee etc and a good spanking slippering or strapping delivered till you yelped and pleaded your sorrow.
That was how it was for me. My parents were both teachers at the local boys grammar school and my sister and myself went to the equivallent girls grammar. Teaching boys, mum and dad were very strict and that was translated to home. Smacked legs and smacked bottoms were the warning that we had got close to the line. The next would be the strap. There was a cane but it was only used for the most serious infractions.
